[ Series ] : The Last Unicorn
[ Canon Point ] : After speaking to the Unicorn and flying away

[ History ] :
Butterfly is a minor character in The Last Unicorn, but he is an important one that resounds with audiences and has made it into almost every interpretation of the story. Early on in the Unicorn's journey, when she has just begun searching for the other unicorns, she runs across a butterfly, who follows her around for a short time. The Unicorn speaks to the butterfly and is actually fairly patient with him, mentioning that butterflies don't live long enough to keep anything straight in their heads and can "only repeat songs and poetry and anything else that they hear... but [she supposes] they mean well enough."

However, the butterfly is the one who tells her about the Red Bull and what happened to the other unicorns. He knows her name, calling her unicorn and even giving her the root of the word and a dictionary definition, and this excites her, making her ask if he's seen other unicorns in the world. He tells her then about how they "passed down all these roads long ago and the Red Bull ran close behind them and covered their footprints." When she asks for more information about the Red Bull, the butterfly gets visibly agitated for the first time in their encounter, and flies away shortly afterwards, leaving the unicorn alone.

[ Personality ] :
Butterfly is very friendly and personable. He's not in any way intimidated by the Unicorn, which seems to take her by surprise (it's also implied later on that other animals know she's different and tend to shy away from her). Nope, he's perfectly happy to fly right up to a magical, enchanted creature and perch on her horn while singing merrily.

Because he's a butterfly, his life will be very short, and as such he can't keep anything straight and has trouble following the thread of a conversation, often diverting off into tangents and singing things that don't entirely make sense. Or do they? One of the most interesting things about the character is how he keeps mentioning things that are only relevant in our world, and not Unicorn's. When she first asks him his name, he jokes that it's Rumpelstiltskin, and clearly recognizes this as a joke. He sings a line from "Won't You Come Home, Bill Bailey?", which was a popular song in the US in 1902, and then tells the Unicorn he must "Take the A Train", which was the name of Duke Ellington's signature piece, published in 1940. When he tells Unicorn her name, he gives it in both old French and Latin. And yet clearly the Unicorn's world is not the same as our own, more similar to Tolkien's Middle Earth than our own plane of existence, but Butterfly has still somehow heard and remembered these songs, published forty years apart, and knows about Earth languages and their roots.

Moreover, Butterfly tells Unicorn her name right around the time she's getting tired of him and walking away, knowing the one thing that's certain to get her attention. He also does the best he can to get across vital information to her, telling her all he knows about the Red Bull, despite how it upsets him.

Butterfly knows more than he lets on initially, although it's unclear if he's truly aware of all he knows or if it's all a happy coincidence. Behind his happy, cheerful exterior there's a serious side, one that can be drawn out with persistence and encouragement. It's also my belief that the butterfly fourth walls and has some awareness of our world, although it's buried beneath so much silliness and singing that even the unicorn is unaware of it. He's helpful, fighting his own nature to tell the unicorn what she needs to know, and he's brave, staying out later than he should (braving the cold of night, which is deadly to a fragile butterfly) to get across the information he needs to share.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
For strengths, Butterfly is friendly and engaging, with a wealth of songs and poetry to share, even if he can't quite remember anything in its entirety. If he likes someone, he'll try to be helpful and tell them what they need to know, even if he doesn't always get that across in the best ways. He's also pretty and has a very pleasant singing voice.

For weaknesses, he's a butterfly, and thus prone to all the dangers that butterflies must face: cats, birds, little kids, insecticides, and so on. He also can't handle cold well at all. Finally, he's very trusting, and could be led astray by less desirable elements.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
Butterfly will respond to most correspondences by singing or reciting poetry. He can speak for himself, but it's difficult for him, and he'll have to really, really want to get his point across to be able to do that. He's also illiterate (butterflies can't read, don't be ridiculous!), so he won't be doing any texting on his SFC.

[ Sample ] :
[In the middle of the Plaza, near the coral, there's a small, purple butterfly with sodden wings. He's crouched close to the stones, his wings laying flat and useless on either side of his body, but he's largely unconcerned with his plight. It's warm here, and bright, and his wings will dry out soon enough. He's far enough away from the center of things that no one has noticed him yet, and once his wings are a little drier and not so heavy, he'll crawl up the side of the coral and get out of the way of hurrying feet and the possible range of any roving cats. In the meantime, though, he'll stay where he is, feeling the sun warm his wings and lighten them, and if anyone passes close enough or bends down towards him, they'll hear him singing, softly and quietly, to himself.]

What's this? What's this?
There's color everywhere!
What's this? What's this?
There's white things in the air...

[His wings shiver, and he laughs, a light, tinkling sound, and starts climbing the coral.]

Who am I?
Two four six oh one!
